Anyone who has lived in Dubai's Jumeirah Lakes Towers (JLT) knows that the kitchens often leave much to be desired. Unless an owner has undertaken renovations, the kitchens typically follow a basic, copy-and-paste style, as you can see in the "before" photo below. The materials used are often cheap, leading to many kitchens falling apart over time.
I was tasked with redesigning a kitchen for a one-bedroom apartment in JLT's Lake Terrace tower. The existing kitchen is very dark due to its position away from natural light. The dark faux cherry wood cabinet doors and black countertops only exacerbate the lack of light, making the space feel even more cramped and uninviting.

In my design proposal, I suggested light-painted cabinetry paired with a natural stone countertop to brighten up the space. Good lighting is also essential, so I incorporated an LED strip light under the wall cabinets and added wall lights on either side of the extractor. The extractor itself comes with spotlights to ensure the cooking area is well-lit.

The existing kitchen features a peninsula with stools, but the owner never uses this seating area. Given the spaciousness of the living, dining, and kitchen areas, I proposed removing the peninsula to create a more open and airy layout. To make up for the lost storage space, I added a freestanding dresser for crockery and other items. The new kitchen design actually offers more storage than the previous one, and the fridge freezer and washing machine are neatly concealed within cabinets.

The result is a fresh and modern kitchen with slim Shaker-style doors that add a touch of classic charm. This new design complements the overall style of the apartment, creating a bright, functional, and aesthetically pleasing space.
